Toronto Canada Pickering high school stabbing spree

February 23, 2016  Toronto Canada  Pickering high school stabbing spree  9 injured 1 unidentified suspect arrested. A 14-year-old girl who by law cannot be identified is accused of stabbing six students and three teachers at a Toronto area Pickering High School in Canada. The girl kept an online blog writing since mid-January about her growing urge to commit a mass stabbing. Authorities and media have no clue as to why a girl might run through the hallways with a sudden urge to stab people. An educational assistant says the girl was bullied and that might have set her off.

It is a common event in Israel where it is called a stabbing intifada, but there is no apparent link by either ethnicity or religion to a nationalistic or terrorist motive, only bullying and mental illness.

Liberal media mentioned that Zahra Vaid who identifies herself as "Canadian and Muslim" was mistakenly confused as the attacker by a conservative counterjihad blog as the the Globe and Mail‎ printed she was another person who texted about the student, not the girl accused of the crime "students, earlier angry and scared, were full of sympathy for the 14-year-old girl police accused of the crime. Zahra Vaid, as she texted with one of seven people slashed".   It is illegal to name suspects under 18 in Canada unless they are tried as an adult. According to commenters,  the criminal is Caucasian who is under age so cannot be named.

Pickering High School is a Canadian high school located in Ajax, Ontario, within the Durham District School Board. Specifically, the school is found in historical Pickering Village, Ontario. The school has students in grades 9 to 12, and offers gifted and French immersion classes. In February 2009 the school was placed in lock down after a stabbing and ensuing motor vehicle accident occurred several blocks away, at a nearby park.

They made claims about my identity, religion, and intentions. I responded by posting a status on Facebook, where I expressed no violence, only fear and a commitment to challenge rampant Islamophobia directed against me. Unfortunately, in our world sometimes speaking out against wrong that is done to you, particularly when you are the victim, when you are harmed, when you feel unsafe, isn't enough to help you. Facebook deleted my post, calling it a violation of their community guidelines. Many of us have probably experienced something being removed off of our Facebook for this reason, but for this? Now, although the Globe and Mail has committed to altering their article to ensure that I am placed as far as possible from being identified as the attacker and while the article written against me by the Gateway Pundit has removed my name and any association of the article with Islam, this incident occurred. That is what is important. It happened, and it will happen again. This is going to be pushed forward by me, as far as possible. Particularly so that people do not need to undergo this, so journalists actually realize that what they write can truly and deeply impact someone's life forever. I will come out of this, because I have. Many do not. And that is the focus of this._______________________________________________________________Here is my original post:Writing this, I am shaking. I ask my Facebook friends to take a moment and read this for me as it concerns my safety.Following the events at Dunbarton High School this week, I engaged in an interview with the Globe and Mail discussing the ability of the online realm to shape the way events are interpreted and discussed. I argue that it was quite a critical discussion with reporter Selena Ross. It seems pretty normal to have the news contact you to discuss an issue that has occurred in your community, right? Quite often, it makes you feel as if your opinion matters, as if you are important, as if what you say is worth expressing. But you see, when you are Muslim it isn't that simple. When you are Muslim, you instantly become the criminal. An American blog (who claims to be the deliverer of right-wing news) caught a hold of the story, and the only thing that stood out to them in the story was my name. Zahra Vaid. But you see, to them I am not just Zahra Vaid, an individual who has given their opinion on the matter. I become Zahra Vaid, the criminal. This blog extracted information from a Canadian outlet, and simply clung my name to the crime, calling their article "Canadian Muslim Girls on Mass Stabbing Spree – 8 Injured."

Zahra Vaid falsely ID'd as accused in Pickering school stabbing by U.S. blog  CBC February 26, 2016  A Toronto university student is speaking out after a right-wing American blog falsely identified her as the teen who went on a stabbing spree at a Pickering high school earlier this week, and insinuated religion was behind the attack.    Zahra Vaid posted on Facebook after Tuesday's stabbing at Dunbarton High School, where her sister's friends go to school. Vaid, who attends the University of Toronto, said after reading the 14-year-old accused's blog, it was clear she'd been suffering.... Vaid provided comment to The Globe and Mail newspaper, expressing similar ideas. But from there, an American blog, citing the Globe's report, identified Vaid as the accused in the stabbing.

Gateway Pundit, a right-wing blog, made the error in a post called "Canadian Muslim Girl Goes on Mass Stabbing Spree – 8 Injured => Authorities Baffled on Motive Behind Attack."  The blog — written by Jim Hoft, who is active in the Tea Party movement — has since been updated to remove the inaccuracy. "It's obviously frustrating for me as a reporter," said Selena Ross, who wrote the Globe story....

Originally, Ross' story read: "The students, earlier angry and scared, were full of sympathy for the 14-year-old girl police accused of the crime. Zahra Vaid, as she texted with one of seven people slashed — none were seriously injured — found that victim, a family friend, changing his tone."... newspaper rearranged the sentence to make sure there was no further misunderstanding

In 2013, Hoft was awarded an honour from a self-described news watchdog group called 'Accuracy in Media', along with Fox News journalist Catherine Herridge. Identifying a minor accused of a crime is unlawful in Canada under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Why can’t I just be normal?” What changed? The discovery of the suspect’s Tumblr blog, and then an intense debate over its contents among her peers in texts and on Twitter, Facebook and other social media.
