University of Texas Haruka Weiser Dance Student Assassinated Suspect Meechaiel Criner

University of Texas Haruka Weiser Dance Student Murdered Suspect Meechaiel Criner --- ===

Was it a random murder, or part of a patterns of murders of college students an mass shootings and accidents targeting college students?

1 Asian college student murdered, 1 suspect arrested  April 5, 2016 University of Texas Haruka Weiser Dance Student Murdered  University of Texas Austin student Haruka Weiser (full name: Haruka Juliana Tsunemine Weiser) was found murdered in the Waller Creek area near the alumni center and the football stadium. A tall black man with a woman's bicycle on a video was sought as a suspect.  She was a ballet dancer recruited on a full scholarship after the college saw he perform on campus with  high school group, with a second major was in premed. She is from Portland, Oregon and she had planned to visit family in Japan. Her father (caucasian) is a doctor.  She was reported missing on April 4, but not been seen since seen leaving the drama building at around 9:30 p.m. on April 3 and friends could not reach he later that night when they called. Police said Weiser had been walking back to her dorm when she was attacked, assaulted and killed. On April 8, a 17-year-old homeless teen Meechaiel Khalil Criner was charged with murder after tips and the local fire department recognized the description of a man who they found monday morning burning evidence at an abandoned building, and gave a ride back to his homeless shelter. A later search showed he had stolen the victim's macbook and gym bag. It has been  the first  homicide on campus in the 50 years since the Charles Whitman Shootings in 1966. An earlier high school newspaper interview reveals a troubled youth from a broken family and foster care who complained about being taunted for his African accent and aspiring to prevail and to help others. Police files reveal the suspect was diagnosed with schizophrenia, autism and depression and beaten by his grandmother who had been reported as missing from being under child protective services care. Suspect has been called a "chronic foster care runaway" His mother Vivian Criner says she will return to Texas to set the record straight that her son must be innocent.

Meechaiel had only recently arrived in Austin. He was arrested at the East Austin Lifeworks, a center that “offers 16 different programs in counseling, housing, and workforce/education to help Austin youth & families find their path to self-sufficiency.” Why does a random homeless boy immediately murder a girl, and act like a professional hit man burning evidence?

Looks similar, but probably not directly connected to other colleges of serial murders of college women, often by black suspects. Police: Suspect in missing UVA student case linked to '09 death: Does Virginia have a serial killer?  The arrest of Jesse Matthew - the suspect in the disappearance of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham - has resulted in a "significant break" in the 2009 death of another young woman in the same area, police said.  Virginia State Police say there is a "new forensic link" between the Hannah Graham case and the death of Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student, who went missing after attending a Metallica concert in Charlottesville in October 2009. Haruka Juliana Tsunemine Weiser[1] (June 20, 1997[2] – April 4, 2016) was a University of Texas at Austin student who was murdered while returning to her dorm from a class in the campus's drama building.[3]

Early life and education[edit]

Weiser was born on June 20, 1997.[4] Her father Thomas Weiser is a medical doctor with the Portland Area Indian Health Service, her mother Yasuyo Tsunemine is a social worker, and she has two younger siblings.[5] She attended the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy (ACMA) inBeaverton, Oregon, a suburb of Portland, where she was part of the class of 2015. She began dance training in sixth grade and was involved in her school's dance company, Dance West.[6] In 2014, she was recruited by University of Texas at Austin during a high school dance performance. AtUniversity of Texas at Austin, she lived in the Prather dorm on campus and planned to major in pre-med studies alongside dance (which was her first major).[7]

Death[edit]

On April 3, 2016 around 9:30 pm, Weiser called to inform a friend that she was on the way back to her dorm from the Winship Drama Building. As she was making the five minute walk home, UT cameras recorded a man watching someone who is thought to be Weiser near the Liberal Arts Building of the UT campus. The man put down the kick stand of his bicycle, pulled out a "shiny rigid object" from the back of his pants, and followed Wesier behind the campus' alumni center. The man wasn't seen again on camera until two hours later when he was shown limping east on 23rd Street while carrying a small duffel bag he didn't have earlier. On April 4, 2016, when Weiser failed to return home, she was reported missing by one of her roommates. The next day, her body was found in Waller Creek.[8]
Investigators found "obvious signs of trauma" on Weiser's corpse and declared that she was sexually assaulted and strangled. However, the cause of death has not been declared.[9]
On April 7, 2016, police arrested the alleged 17-year-old homeless and non-student Meechaiel Criner . Earlier in the week on April 4, firefighters responded to a trash fire where they found Criner burning objects inside an abandoned building. At the scene of the fire, Criner had both the bicycle and the duffel bag seen in the UT campus surveillance footage.[10][11][12]

Legacy[edit]

On April 8, 2016, UT Austin's Dance Repertory Theatre, where Wesier worked in the wardrobe crew, honored Weiser in their production Bodies & Souls.[13] On April 12, 2016, about 100 people gathered for a memorial walk to honor Weiser by walking her last steps before her murder to a memorial near Waller Creek.[14] The 2016 Longhorn Run, a yearly 5K and 10K race and a campus tradition, held a moment of silence in honor of Weiser before the race began. Ribbons were distributed at the race and decorated on 23rd Street, one of the paths of the race.[15]

Family Statement:
shared on April 7 by the family of Haruka Weiser:
Haruka Juliana Tsunemine Weiser, our beloved daughter, sister and friend was taken from us too soon. We will forever miss her; the pain of our sudden and tragic loss is unfathomable. We are grateful for all the support, kindness and prayers that have been offered to us. Words cannot express the outpouring of love we have received.
Haruka was a passionate and dedicated dancer and student. She was so happy to be a student at UT and was looking forward to the chance to perform again as a Dance Major and she was declaring a second major in pre-med studies, too. She had plans to explore the world of medicine this summer and to travel to visit family in Japan.
Although Haruka loved to perform on stage she never sought the spotlight in her daily life. Perhaps the last thing she would want is to be the poster child for any cause. And yet, as we struggle to understand why she was killed, if her death can somehow make it safer for a young woman to walk home, if it will prevent another assault or murder, then at least we could find some meaning behind an otherwise senseless and tragic death. To her friends, the many of students at UT and at her high school in all the dance programs in which she participated we are united in prayer for Haruka and for each other. No parent, brother, sister or friend should have to face this kind of sadness, this kind of loss.
Yet, many do. And now we have joined that family. At UT, Haruka did make many friends and received so much support from this community. We know Haruka would not wish for us be stuck in sadness but to keep living life to the fullest; that is what we will try to do in the coming days. And we offer prayers and encouragement for you to do the same.
Thank you for respecting our privacy at this time.
