On the morning of 10 May 2016, an unnamed 27-year-old man committed a stabbing attack[1] at Grafing station in the town of Grafing,[2] southernGermany. The attack left one 56-year-old man dead and several injured.[3][4][5] The perpetrator was arrested shortly after the attack.[6] Though it was first reported that he had a migrant background, later reports indicated that he was from the German state of Hesse.[5][7]
The attack was compared to a knife attack at Hanover main station on 26 February 2016.[8]

The attack[edit]

A 56-year old man was attacked by the perpetrator with a 10cm long knife on board of a Munich S-Bahn train. He died later in hospital. Three further men, 43, 55, and 58 years old, were then attacked on or near the station, one of them was critically injured. Two of them were cyclists passing by.[5] All victims were randomly chosen. The train driver and a security official were reported to have intervened. They reportedly chased away the perpetrator.[5] The police was at the crime scene on 05.04 am and arrested the attacker only minutes later near the station.[5]
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) when he started stabbing the passengers, also he shouted: "You unbelievers must die!" The authorities confirmed this in a press conference, and the perpetrator did so during interrogation.[9][5] A spokesperson at the Bavarian state criminal investigation office told that she could not confirm that the attack was terror related.[2] The police said that the attack was done with "political motive," based on "made statements".[3] Ken Heidenreich, spokesperson of the prosecutor's office, said on the morning of 10 May that an "Islamistic background" was likely.[5]
Later that day it was reported that the perpetrator had drug and mental problems and was treated two days ago.[5] An Islamistic background of the attacker was preliminary ruled out, but a political motive is still considered, though the attacker appeared to be confused during the interrogation.[5] The perpetrator was not cooperating during first interrogation, later he admitted the attack.[7][5] Links to terrorist networks are not known so far.[7] The police established a special commission, consisting of 80 officers.[5] The perpetrator's cell phone and tablet computer were found and are currently being evaluated, in addition CCTV recordings from the train and station are being investigated.[5]
